P.A.I.N
Infinite Crises

  Wednesday, November 28, 2001
The playful little squirrel,
with cherry-wood eyes
that sparkle like stars in a lake
and fur so soft as an angel's wings
that's the color of sand on a Hawaiian beach
and a crimson tip to his tail,
who collects nuts for himself and his friends
to build a mountain of sustenance for all to share
so that none would go hungry in Winter
and who once in his hunt found a small treasure,
a red ruby stone the size of a pea in the shape of his favorite fruit,
which he kept beneath his nest
till the day it went missing
and the sweetest squirrel cried
tears of fear and of love and despair,
and who just yesterday saw his ruby again
in the bed of his closest friend,
a raccoon who knew all of his secrets,
DIED.
